World No.5 Daniil Medvedev has been whacked with fines totalling more than $120,000 for two incidents in his first and second round matches at the Australian Open, including when he whacked a net camera and destroyed his racquet.

But the much heavier fine of the two – a $107,000 fine – was for “inappropriate behaviour” during his second-round defeat to American qualifier Learner Tien.

The leading Russian had two matches in Melbourne – the comeback win over little-known Thai opponent Kasidit Samrej, and the second-round loss to Tien, an agonising defeat that finished close to 3am local time.

It marked three-time finalist Medvedev’s earliest departure from the Australian Open since 2018.

Last year’s runner-up incurred a point penalty in Thursday night’s defeat to Tien when he chucked his equipment toward the sideline, skidding it across the court until it reached an advertising panel near his bench.

In another decisive moment, he voiced displeasure about being called for two consecutive foot-faults, resulting in a double-fault, during the second-set tie-break.

Medvedev also skipped his post-match media commitments early on Friday morning.

Under rules governed by the sport’s grand slam board, players can be fined under the “Abuse of Racquets or Equipment” category.
